1. Types of smart lock protocol

  • Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a popular smart lock protocol because it doesn't drain the battery as fast as Wi-Fi. After all, it's not like you can plug the door latch and who will remember to replace the battery on the door lock? With Bluetooth, the lock's battery will last a year or so.

The downside of Bluetooth is that your range is a bit limited - around 300 feet in the best case and maybe a lot less depending on your home layout. It's enough to control your lock when you're at home, but wander too far and you'll lose connection. Some examples of the best bluetooth smart door lock are August Smart Lock Pro 3rd Gen and U-tec Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Smart Lock.

  • Z-Wave

The range of the Z-Wave connection is around 120 feet, so the lock will need to be at least close to the center - although additional Z-Wave devices can act as range extenders by looping. Z-Wave signals can bounce up to four different times, up to a maximum range of about 600 feet (walls, doors, and other obstructions will be charged across range).

Z-Wave's biggest hurdle is the need for an additional hub for Wi-Fi connectivity. The upside is that you can connect to more third-party devices than a standard Bluetooth dongle - if you have SmartThings or another hub. However, if you don't plan on using a bunch of other devices with your key, Z-Wave might not be right for you. We recommend the Yale Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt as the best Z-Wave smart door lock.

  • Wi-Fi

With Wi-Fi enabled, you can remotely lock and unlock doors, create new users or access codes from anywhere, and view the key's status and activity logs. Connecting your smart key to the Internet using Wi-Fi will give you the most options for features, including integration with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

We do not recommend filling another outlet in your home with the Wi-Fi module if you have not set up a specific smart key. That said, the built-in Wi-Fi will probably drain your battery faster than Bluetooth, so stock up on the necessary batteries.

There are many types of deadbolt wifi on the market, but in this article we will present you the best smart Wi-Fi door lock at a reasonable price, including: WYZE WLCKG1, Kwikset 99380-002 Halo, and Yale Assure Wi-Fi Smart Lock.

2. How smart is your lock?

An important note to consider first is that some "smart keys" don't work at all with the smartphone app or any smart home network hub. They are really just electronic locks that use codes instead of keys to open. One more step from there, you will find the Bluetooth-only padlock.

These apps work with a smartphone app, but cannot be monitored remotely or through the smart home system. That's fine if you're looking to get rid of the keys from your pocket. But it's less impressive if you want to make your gateway a real part of your home network.

3. Replace vs retrofit

You are forgiven for not wanting to replace the antique door handle on your vintage Victorian shirt with a metal device that looks more like home to prevent people from leaving the mall bank branch. A large number of smart key products do not require you to replace all of your existing hardware.

Instead, they are only installed inside the door, replacing only the inside of the door latch. You can continue to use the standard key from the outside or unlock it via the smartphone app.

4. Backup power

What do you do if the battery inside the padlock dies - and you're stuck outside? Some locks allow emergency powering if this occurs. Yale's Real Living locks have external latches that you can connect to the 9 volt battery, giving you enough water to open the door. Other models still retain the traditional key cylinder for redundancy.

5. Visitor features

Most smart locks allow you to set up a temporary lock for a butler, which can be deleted when they return home. Even smarter systems allow you to set a time limit when each access code can be used.

Best Smart Door Lock Reviews

1. WYZE WLCKG1 WiFi Smart Door Lock

Wyze is known for its inexpensive home security cameras and sensors. Now it has entered the smart lock arena with WYZE WLCKG1 WiFi Smart Door Lock. Easy to set up, it uses a plug-in port to connect to your home Wi-Fi network so you can control it with your phone and share access with friends and family. It's the best lock you'll find for the money, though it doesn't offer as many features as our more expensive picks.

This best smart door lock uses the cylindrical assembly, door latch and locking bolts available on your door. It comes with an internal suspension bar, a plug-in module, four AA batteries, a mounting plate, three tail adapters, and a quick start guide. The main component, the escutcheon interior, has a minimalistic design with a beautifully brushed aluminum finish. It measures 4.9 x 2.5 x 1.3 inches (HWD) and has a 2-inch wide thumb wheel on the bottom and a small LED light at the top. The LED will flash green during setup, light a solid green when the door is locked or unlocked, and turn solid red when unlocked or unlocked.

WYZE WLCKG1 WiFi Smart Door Lock performed well in testing. It responds instantly to lock and open orders using the mobile app, and follows my automatic lock schedule up to the moment of teeing off. Push alerts come in immediately whenever the door is locked or unlocked, and when the door is open. The lock sounds an alarm when the door is open, but it's not loud, even when the volume is set to high. The Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock features worked as expected.

For this product, the manufacturer gives us many choices. You can buy only one of 2 parts: the smart lock or the controller keypad. In addition, you will get a discount if you buy the combo.

2. Kwikset 99380-002 Halo Wi-Fi Smart Lock

Kwikset, as usual, offers enhanced security and protection by having lots of advanced properties! The Kwikset 99380-002 Halo Wi-Fi Smart Lock is undoubtedly one of the best Kwikset locks after thorough research we have made the decision to announce. It's reliable, has a nice interface, and is more convincing to use. Not to mention, features such as SmartKey security, WIFI connection, etc. make your life a lot easier. Such innovative features truly deserve the name of modern 21st century technologies.

One of the biggest expectations people have when buying a digital key is convenience in use. Well, this Kwikset lock takes it to a completely different level from WIFI connectivity. You can control the lock mechanism with your phone. What could be more convenient than that?

Additionally, the Kwikset App will push a notification every time there is some interaction in the locked device. So you can be informed about every activity. Not to mention, you can also view the lock event history with your phone thanks to the great app.

Some electronic locks are really annoying to deal with. Maybe you've dealt with some of the buttons that didn't work or the hard buttons on the padlock. These problems make it a terrible user experience. However, with the Halo Wi-Fi Smart Lock, the UI is fantastic. There are 10 digits on the keyboard, backlit.

So even if you are in complete darkness you can hit the correct code. That could be a relief for a lot of people. No need to find your key every time you need access. Just enter the code and the lock key unlocks instantly. You couldn't ask for more convenience than electronic keyboard keywords.

One thing that makes us love this smart door lock is the variety of packages it offers. In addition to the combo that includes the usual keypad and deadbolt, Kwikset offers a variety of other options. You can either buy the keypad only, or buy it with the entry knob. To create unity in the house, you can buy an exterior handle combo.

3. August Smart Lock Pro

Smart homes are getting smarter, but not everyone wants to completely ditch their old systems. For example, while there are plenty of smart locks designed to completely replace your old padlock in place of a new keyboard or keyhole, some people want to keep the ability to use their old keys. However, that's when August comes out with August Smart Lock Pro 3rd Gen, which matches your current latch and allows you to keep using the old key when you (or your landlord) want it, while still adding the benefits of smarter locking.

When you first bring the August Smart Lock Pro out of the box, you'll notice that it's a nice looking lock. It's certainly bulky at 3.4 inches wide and 2 inches deep protruding from your door, but it's clearly well built with a nice aluminum finish. The result is not so appealing or lavish, in a way that some smart home technologies can. Easy device setup: All you need to do is download the August app, create an account, then open the menu and hit the “Set up a new device” button.

However, simply locking and unlocking this best smart door lock isn't all you can do from the app. You can also set up automation, which can be helpful for those who want to set up their key and then forget about it. From the app, you can set a lock to unlock automatically when you leave a 200-foot radius around your home, meaning the door will be ready to open as soon as you get home. You can also set the lock to lock automatically after a certain amount of time - although we'd like you to be able to use the same location-based automation as when you unlock your device.

Currently, August Smart Lock Pro is being sold on Amazon with two different colors, dark gray and silver. You can choose the color that matches your home style. In addition, if you wish to add a keypad, there will also be a combo that suits your wishes.

4. ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro Smart Lock

U-tec Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Smart Lock is one of the most versatile smart locks to attack DA. Like most models, it uses a mobile app that allows you to lock and unlock doors from anywhere with your phone, and it has a keypad that allows you to use temporary pin codes over time and forever. It also has a fingerprint scanner, as well as a cylinder with hidden keys behind the keyboard. As if that weren't enough, the U-Bolt Pro can be locked with voice commands and this is one of the first smart locks we tested that could also be unlocked with voice commands.

The U-Bolt Pro we tested was a complete set with internal and external shields, a fixed pin assembly, mounting screws, 4 AA batteries, a screwdriver, a drill pattern and one Wi-Fi plug. You can also order without a Wi-Fi connection for a better price. The lock is suitable for standard 1-5/16 to 2.0-inch thick doors and 2-1/8 inch diameter holes with 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inch reverse snap holes.

The U-tec Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Smart Lock is equipped with Bluetooth radio, but lacks an embedded Wi-Fi radio. Instead, it comes with a small plug-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi bridge that locks into your home network and allows you to control it from anywhere. It also lets you lock and unlock with voice commands from Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and use IFTTT apps so it works with third-party smart devices like security lights and cameras. That said, it doesn't support Apple's HomeKit platform.

U-Bolt Pro performed well in testing. The scanner never recognizes the registered fingerprint and responds immediately when the fingerprint is scanned. It also responded quickly to pin code entries as well as app commands to lock and unlock the door. It obeyed my fingerprint schedule and temporary pin code with no issues. Alexa voice commands to lock and unlock doors also work flawlessly, as is the IFTTT app to lock the U-Bolt Pro when the Arlo Pro 3 camera detects motion.

5. Yale Assure Wi-Fi Smart Lock

Yale Assure Wi-Fi Smart Lock is a very minimalist stop: Its outward-facing part is a small, simple panel with a touchpad and nothing else. It is available in four finishes: Black, Oil-rubbed bronze, Polish Brass and Nickel Satin. The keyboard lights up when you touch it. It's a tiny device, which offers a beep and a voice prompt that lets you know what's going on. Touch the keyboard and it sounds when the keyboard lights up. It took too long to enter a passcode, and it initially says, "Time out".

We found the installation to be very simple and easy, taking about 25 minutes for a standard exterior wooden door. The back of the padlock is a large box containing four AA batteries and a locking mechanism. Although this smart lock takes up quite a lot of space on the back of the door, it has an attractive rounded design. The key can store up to 50 keys on its own, but adding an August module will increase this to 250, enough for anyone. They can be in the form of keys stored in the application or just in the form of a passcode. Either way, they can be set to allow access only at certain times, on certain days, or for a single use.

But what if the battery inside the padlock dies while you're outside? You can connect a 9 volt battery to two terminals at the bottom of the keyboard to temporarily power up the lock - enough to get you inside. Since it's linked to August's system, this best smart door lock can take full advantage of that app's smart home compatibility, so you can connect it to August's video doorbell. Feeling too tired of holding the keys? Don't worry because Yale Assure Wi-Fi Smart Lock has a keyless version that will save you time and worry about dropping the key.
